Chris J’Tot’s Mask of Hannya captures the haunting beauty and emotional depth of one of Japan’s most enduring legends. Rich contrasts of warm crimson and spectral blues create an atmosphere of mystery, while the ghostly figure blurs the line between sorrow and menace. Rather than portraying a simple monster, the painting invites viewers to look beyond the mask and imagine the story hidden beneath.
Accompanying Short Story by Mike Bidwell
Created to accompany Chris J’Tot’s painting, Mike Bidwell’s short story explores the legend behind the mysterious figure depicted in Mask of Hannya. Rather than simply explaining the image, the story expands upon its mystery, weaving themes of loss, vengeance, identity, and redemption into the mythology of the World of Yurei.

In Thal, Christopher David Vanderhoof captures one of Yurei‘s most tragic figures at the moment grief becomes something supernatural. As tears of darkness stream down her face, Thal mourns the loss of her greatest love, embodying the thin line between heartbreak and legend. Through bold contemporary techniques and haunting symbolism, the painting offers a powerful interpretation of one of the novel’s most emotional moments.

The story behind Thal is found within the pages of Yurei: Legend of the Shadow Blade. This painting serves as a visual companion to that chapter, bringing one of the novel’s defining moments to life through Christopher David Vanderhoof’s unique artistic vision. Together, the artwork and the written passage invite readers to experience Thal’s sorrow from two different perspectives… one through paint, the other through words.
About the Artist
Christopher David Vanderhoof is a Colorado-based artist whose work blends influences from street art, punk culture, illustration, and the outdoors. Working primarily with acrylics, stencils, and spray paint, he embraces experimentation across styles and mediums, creating bold, expressive pieces that fuse contemporary art with imaginative storytelling.

Struggling along the path burdened with the weight of grief
A hill spreads before me, providing no relief
Step by painful step, I stumble and then fall
I grapple to regain my balance as I emerge from a crawl
Struggling up the hill, I notice a dark and narrow cave
Frightened to the core, I wonder if I am brave
Sadness and grief have worn me to the core
I question why am I on this journey, what’s it all really for
Summoning the last of my strength, I enter within
I wonder if this is just a game I am unable to win
Standing in the blackness a chill fills my spine
Quickly I shine a light, but its reflection nearly makes me blind
My vision has been restored, I cautiously look around
Fear begins to surface. I am frozen at what I have found
The source of the reflection comes immediately into sight
My breath becomes shallow as I move closer, its glow is so bright
Hanging by a hook is a face that I know
Shining my light upon it casts an amazing glow
It’s the mask of my past staring directly at me
It’s at this moment I nearly crumble to my knees
Looking to the right, I notice an endless array
Countless ones are hanging as if they are on display
Moving past the masks so many memories begin to rise
It’s then I understand these were merely a disguise
So many are designed to protect the real me
It’s then I understand it is time to shed them all
if I am ever to be free

Jeff Bidwell is a teacher, poet, father, and lifelong student of mindfulness living in upstate New York. An avid meditator and reader, his writing explores themes of healing, presence, resilience, and the quiet wisdom found in everyday life. Through reflective poetry, Jeff invites readers to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and discover meaning in both life’s struggles and its simple moments.
Jeff is the younger brother of Mike Bidwell, author of Yurei: Legend of the Shadow Blade. Both share a passion for storytelling that encourages personal growth, reflection, and transformation.
